If anyone is looking for a nanny or babysitter, I've found this site to be VERy benificial and have had lots of good experience. Also, if you are ananny or babysitter you can find families.

county college
hi. im going to be an exchange student in the fall. i just got my housing assignment. im in county college. i was wondering how it is social, accomadation-wise, any other way-wise, compared to other colleges. in other words, whats special about it? cause i know at my school here in new york, we also have it set up in communities and each community is known to have more of certain type people, like fraternity/sorority girls, the nerdy community, the stoner/alternative style community. i was wondering if it was like that at lancaster too.
thanks.

Questions
I've just been accepted to Lancaster to study European Studies and I was wondering if any of you knew anything from a student's perspective about it? I am waffling between Lancaster and Portsmouth, so any info would be appreciated.

I was also hoping someone could explain the colleges to me a little better. How they work/how do you pick one/etc etc. As an American, I have no experience with these and the best mental metaphor I could come up with was a frat/sor

My friend and I are visiting colleges during the week of April 10th, Lancaster on the fourteenth, and I know the university is going to be closed that day. We wanted to see the inside of some dorms and get some information about the english, theater, history, and humanities departments. We just want to get a feeling for what it's like there; would anybody be willing to show us around for a little while and/or answer some questions?

Hello
Hello there everyone,

I've just joined this community and wanted to say hi, especially to any other Fylde students out there.
I'm a third year English Laguage student. If anyone wants to say hi, drop me a line. Anyway, I'll stop rambling now.

End of an era!
I just got my copy of STEPS (Winter 2005 edition) and saw that John Allen's retired! Wow, talk about the end of an era - he was Lonsdale's first licensee way back in 1965! ... OK so he left back in September apparently - I guess I should take a peek at the college and JCR websites more often. :)

I knew about the college move, which I think is quite sad - my old room is no more, in fact it's now part of Bowland, poor thing - but from the online photos of the new college it looks much nicer.

Questions About Lancaster!!
Hi, my name is Sandy. I am a psychology major with a sociology minor and I currently am a 2nd year student at Muhlenberg College in the U.S. I am thinking about spending next year ('06-'07 school year) at Lancaster. However, I do have a ton of questions. I think it would be a good idea to get current students opinions on things instead of just reading college material. (They sometimes twist the truth a little! ;x) So I will place any and all questions I have behind a cut and anything you can answer for me would be greatly appreciated! From what I have seen so far and heard, Lancaster seems to be a pretty nice uni!

Questions!Collapse )

Thanks again in advance to anyone and everyone who can give me any information. Even if it is words of encouragement, I would be soooooo happy with it. I am so excited and I really hope everything works out.

Quest for poem origins, printed in 'Steps', winter 2005?
I have the feeling an English studies student was revising for their finals ...

What became of you? Do you ever dream
of Squares or Spines? Have the trickledown
Brutalist shapes you lived in once
entered your mind's broad church, or sank
foundations into the Jungian slime
you arrived with? Does autumn begin
with a blight of tattered fly posters
where you live now? Are there pied wagtails
to pick along the crazed concrete
and guttering of your Lents, or has
a great ice-breaker called Real Life
broken down the terms of the college year?
Was it meant to be, or were your friends
part of a vast coincidence?
Has the way The Waste Land opens
with participles made a big difference?
Does the soft roar of the motorway still
haunt your skylines? Can you play the
pool shark every once in a while and
do you walk in the Shadow of Debt, or
wake in cold sweats when re-sitting
the old exam nightmare?
Did the theoream stick? Have the words flown?
Did you really leave? Can you ever return?

This poem was printed in the Winter 2005 edition of 'Steps', The Lancaster University alumni mag.
The poem is from a fragment found in a University Library book. And I was wondering if anyone knows who wrote it? Did you write it? How old is this poem? I graduated three years ago and this poem really strikes a cord with me ... not least the 'Shadow of Debt' bit :-))

hair salon in Lancaster
I have not yet been to a hair salon in Lancaster. I am considering going to the one on campus. I would really appreciate it if others could recommend a good hair salon in Lancaster.

Thanks very much!

Hello everyone,

I was a student at Lancs for last Spring and Summer terms and took the Women In Society course with Michal Nahman.

Stab in the dark time..

Does anyone still have that coursepack? The yellow one?

What I'm looking for is the article that dealt with Irish women and abortion.

It will be a miracle if this works...

Coming Questions

Hey all.  I'll be coming to Lancaster in the spring, and I was wondering if you might help me with a few questions.

Can I ship stuff ahead of time to the university?

Any good places to rent a mini-fridge?

NERDS RULE!
YO LANCASTER!

Hey, I'm Gord from Canada! I'm in Cartmel College and I got a really nerdy question that needs a really nerdy answer...

Does anyone know how to configure the proxy setting, I'm really new to it and want some file sharing stuff to work, i feel really cut off without the ability to download the latest chart toppers. OR could you recommend some file-sharing programs that works through this net thing.

I know of lusernet, and that's great, everyone who goes to this school should have it, its stupid-fast but kinda limited on content. Download it here if you don't have it!

Hey
Hey,

So ... is anyone else glad to be back at Lancaster? I certainly am glad to be back in County even if I can't get my Internet working in my room yet! I hope all the freshers are having a great time so far and if you have any questions for a third-year Womens Studies student fire away! It was interesting for me last night, I went to visit a brother of a friend who lives in Bowland Tower ... veryyyy high up. Having never been there before, I was surprised at the size of the rooms - they were huge (though County has bigger kitchens and bathrooms so there).

Websites
I go to Lancaster on Saturday, so yeah, this is more of a question for students already there... is it possible to update personal websites from your computer at Lancaster? I use FTP to update mine, and in the booklet it says FTP is allowed, but elsewhere is says hosting websites is blocked by their firewall. I've asked my friend who's already there and he says pretty much nothing works with the firewall but he's not sure about uploading websites and the like. I really need to know if it's possible to update my site once I have my computer up and running in my room, because I'm a geek like that :P... So if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated!

Am moving into my house tomorrow - just need to collect my keys from LUSU before I get there. Is there anything I need to take with me to the housing office? I guess my purple card, but is there anything else?
